Richmond Castle, as viewed from the winding Millgate Street leading to the Market Place.
Richmond Castle is one of England’s oldest Norman stone fortresses, perched above the River Swale in the heart of the town. Built in 1071 by Alan Rufus, it symbolised Norman power in the North and remains a defining feature of Richmond. Ran by English Heritage (whose flag features above the castle in this illustration), it’s a key heritage attraction offering panoramic views, a well preserved keep, and WWI history.
